Here is the American check list of essential things accomplished while just two weeks into our long stay in Bolivia.
Our team of four all arrived in Cochabamba after 32 hrs of travel from PDX. Since landing we have lived at both the office head quarters for EM and with a wonderful host family just 8km outside of the city.
We learned the transportation system by completing a scavenger hunt on our third day and taking multiple trufi, taxi and micros each day to various locations within the city.
At a community center called PEPE, together, we assisted in teaching an english class for children ages 3- 16 with a couple English guys.
Completed sports camp training for Uncharted Waters. The curriculum is designed as a 2-5 day camp that incorporates sport drills and games with bible stories/morals. It really seems to be a great outreach program for local churches to emplement. Sports really are a universal icebreaker.
Went shopping for daily essentials (food and toletries) and both a small open market (Mercado) and a huge open air market (La Concha).
Cheered in a local soccer stadium for the city favorites (They tied.)
Ate street food and survived!
Went on a run and learned how to scare street dogs away.
Attended church in Spanish and was able to follow some of the serman.
Toured an open Catholic church.
Visited El Christo- a huge statue of Christ that rises above the Eastern aspect of the city.
Played Waley ball with local jouvens- similar to volleyball except it is in a racquetball court.
And not to be outdone here in Bolivia we Americans gathered to celebrate July 4th with a BBQ.
Cochabamba is definitely a unique mix of old and new. The cell phones held by Cholitas (traditional dressed ladies selling wares in the city) are the most striking examples of this for me.
Family is very highly valued here, so much of our time is spent with doing errands or sharing life. Our host family has two boys ages 4 and 2. They are super cute and have helped us ease into family life here greatly. Sharing meals, shopping at the Mercado and playing sports have definitely been the highlights for me thus far.
